Trinity Sophomore Wins Fifth Consecutive Gold Medal

Congratulations to Trinity sophomore Christopher Elder, and his sister, Sophia, for winning their fifth-consecutive gold medal in figure skating!

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY…November 21, 2016– Ice Dancing Journey.com is proud to announce that local ice dancing team and 2015 US Figure Skating Intermediate Dance Champions, Christopher and Sophia Elder, brought home their fifth consecutive Gold Medal for their outstanding performance at the 2017 Midwestern Sectional Championships on November 18, 2016.

Christopher Elder (15 years old) and Sophia Elder (13 years old) returned to the Midwestern Sectionals for the fifth year in a row and dominated all legs of the competition to win the Gold Medal. Their score of 101.91was nearly 11.42 points ahead of the second place team. Their program was skated to a medley of Masquerade Waltz by Aram Khachatwian and was choreographed by LSA coach Kelley Morris-Adair. The team is coached by Kelley and her husband Donny Adair, a former U.S. Dance Champion. The Elders train at the Louisville Skating Academy.

In conjunction with their winning performances, Team Elder has been honored as selected members of the “Athlete High Performance Development Pool” (AHPDP) for the 2016-17 competition season. The Athlete High Performance Development Pool is a new initiative created to provide opportunities for identified athletes who have not met the criteria to be in the International Selection Pool (ISP), but show the ability to represent Team USA in the future.

“Donny and I are extremely pleased with Sophie and Christopher’s performances in Colorado. Competing in altitude can be intimidating and challenging but they were very prepared and competed with great energy. We look forward to a successful week at the US National Championships in Kansas City,” states coach Kelley Adair

The US Championship qualifying events include three sectionals: Midwestern, Pacific, and Eastern. The top four teams from these events go to the US Figure Skating Championships in January, 2017 in Kansas City, Kansas.

Christopher is a Sophomore at Trinity High School and Sophia is a eighth grader at St. Margaret Mary in Louisville, Kentucky. Both skaters are high achievers, and embrace challenges with adult confidence. Christopher Elder is first in his High School class. He enjoys playing soccer, is an avid member of the Trinity Math Team, and is an aficionado (fan) for the University of Kentucky basketball team. Sophia Elder is a former member of Louisville Rhythmic Gymnastics, where at age of 6, she qualified to Junior Olympics. Sophia also excels in school and enjoys time with her friends.
