Summer Reading List

Summer Reading Mission Statement

Trinity’s English department believes that reading over the summer is a vital part of keeping a student’s skills sharp for the upcoming year. These skills will carry over into all of the student’s classes, not just English.

The department also hopes that summer reading selections can be used to foster a desire to read and will allow students access to works that will help them develop intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally by opening their eyes to a larger world. To that end, our summer reading lists includes a variety of accessible texts that will allow for skill-building, intellectual growth, and natural reading enjoyment.

Additionally, an element of student choice has been included, as it has been proven to stimulate reading interest. The lists include fiction and non-fiction, classics and contemporary novels, male and female authors, and a variety of topics from science fiction to sports.

During the summer students in all grades should read a minimum of two books:

  1. One work is the required selection for each grade level. He should read this selection near the end of summer so it is freshest in his memory.
  2. One book MUST be chosen by the student from his grade level list.
  3. Students should download and print out copies of the summer reading worksheet (see file download on this page) and fill out one for each novel. Teachers will expect these to be completed and brought to class on the first day of school.

NOTE: All books are available at local area bookstores, public libraries, and/or online. Students can also save money by getting copies at used book stores in the area. Many students find it best to wait until July to begin their reading so it is fresher in their minds when they return to school.
