Merton House is named after Thomas Merton, the internationally renowned Catholic monk whose writings on spirituality, contemplation, and social justice continue to be a source of inspiration to readers around the world today.
The motto of Merton House is Primer Inter Pares. The translation is “First Among Equals.” This motto was chosen because, in many ways, it is indicative of the entire House System. While each House strives to win the House Cup each year and finish first, the competition is done in the spirit of friendship and brotherhood. Each House wants to be first but each House also realizes that the bonds formed at Trinity ultimately make us “Brothers for Life.”
