2019 Shillelagh Cup Recap
The 2019 Shillelagh Cup proved to be as exciting as a Trinity vs. St. X football game!
The Shillelagh Cup Golf Tournament took a hiatus in 2018, but Trinity and St. X Alumni teamed up this year at The Polo Fields Golf Course to compete in a golf tournament battling for the Shillelagh!
Brian Coxon ’05, one of our Shillelagh Cup’s long-time organizers, said, “It was a hard-fought tournament, we ended up winning 5 of the 8 matches for a one-point win.”
Brad Savko ‘05 made an albatross on hole 9, which is harder to do than hitting a hole in one! Brad was 180 yards out, hitting a 6 iron into the green, the ball bounced about 12 feet in front of the pin, smacked the center of the pin and dropped straight in the hole! Justin Thomas would have been impressed! Way to go Brad!
The win came on the last hole with the team of Justin Roberts ’05 and Alex Ubelhart ’05 sinking a 10-foot putt for the Trinity win.
David Goheen ’90, said “Trinity came in as a heavy underdog against a strong St. X Team, but the team was able to grind it out on some close matches to seal the win.”
The Shillelagh will be presented to Trinity during the St. X – Trinity Varsity Football Game on Friday.
For the past 50 years, two of Kentucky’s high school football powerhouses, the Tigers of St. Xavier and the Shamrocks of Trinity, have competed for “the shillelagh,” an Irish war club and symbol of great pride. The AJ Ryan Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians is proud to have donated this worthy trophy and looks forward to presenting it to the victor each Fall. Each year a medallion with the game’s score is added: The medallion is gold if the Tigers win, silver if the Shamrocks are the victors.
The game is one of the best-attended high school games in the country. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS!
