Society for the Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence among Adolescents (SPAVA) Peacemaker Scholarship
Society for the Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence among Adolescents (SPAVA) and Norton Children’s Prevention and Wellness are seeking applications for scholarships to be awarded to students who exhibit compassion and promote peacemaking in their school/community.
The Peacemaker Scholarship
In the spirit of peacemakers like Ghandi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Peacemaker Scholarship is given to students who uphold the mission of SPAVA – supporting a nonviolent society by being mentors and role models for our youth. Awardees exhibit tolerance and acceptance despite differences and work to resolve conflict peacefully.
ELIGIBILITY AND FUNDING LEVELS
Funding towards an academic scholarship to be used towards post-secondary education, two (2) $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students in grades 11-12. Students must write an essay describing their qualifications (refer to selection criteria). Note: Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or “C” average. Applicants must attend high school in Jefferson County, KY.
1. Personal initiative to promote compassion and peacemaking: In under 500 words, describe a specific initiative, program, activity, volunteer opportunity, etc. that you have done to promote compassion and peacemaking.

b. How and why did you start it?
c. How did you involve others in your initiative?
d. How will you use the funding to support your post- secondary education?
2. Two letters of recommendation: Letters should be from teachers, employers, and/or leaders from the community familiar with you and your work.
3. Proof of grade point average: You must submit a school transcript with your application.

Completed applications are due by 4:00 PM on March 15, 2019. The award recipients will be notified by
mail by mid-May. Applicants who do not receive awards will be notified. Those not receiving an award
are encouraged to apply again the following year.
