On Wednesday, March 13, eight Shamrock debaters travelled to UK for the Kentucky High School Speech League State Tournament. Five of seven entries advanced to elimination rounds on Thursday.
Porter Hunt advanced to Octofinals in Varsity LD and was named 7th best speaker.
Herchel Davis, Walker Evans and Ben Taylor all advanced to supers of Congress. Walker placed 6th.
Mark Hughes WON Varsity Lincoln-Douglas! “I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to see my only senior achieve a goal he set as a freshman,” said moderator Ms. Amy Zuccaro. “I am so proud of the work he has done.”
Zuccaro was later named Debate Coach of the Year by her peers.
“We may be a small team, but my kids work extremely hard,” she said. “They are always the underdog, but they continue to prove that small teams can have big impacts.”
On Friday, five Speech Rocks started their tournament. Every single student advanced at least one event.
The team of Gus Boyer and Charlie Thegreat advanced to Quarterfinals of Duo Improv (top 24 in state);
Mark Hughes: Quarters of Impromptu (top24);
Gus Boyer: Quarters of Storytelling (top 24);
Gus Boyer: Semis of Humorous Interpretation (top 12 – actually placed 7th);
Walker Evans: Semis of Impromptu (top 12 – actually placed 8th);
Mark Hughes and Porter Hunt: Finals of Extemp (top 6); Mark placed 5th and Porter 2nd.
The entire Trinity team was given an Award of Excellence. To qualify, teams cannot be one of the top-10 in overall sweepstakes and must have at least six entries. The award is designed to recognize teams demonstrating efficiency. We had seven of 10 entries advance to elimination rounds.
