From Trinity Director of Athletics, Rob Saxton H ’15
It is my pleasure to announce Gary Owens ’88 as Director, Sports Ministry. Gary will assume the role vacated by the passing of our friend and colleague Steven Tompkins ’81. Steven originated this important role at Trinity in 2014. Gary will continue the efforts performed well by Steven, working with our external partner, SportsLeader (Virtue = Strength), and will add his own unique talents and ideas to the position. (In fact, Gary has already led a couple of initiatives with our Cross Country and Soccer teams).
Asking Gary Owens to assume the position of Director, Sports Ministry was simply the right thing to do. We are thrilled that he has taken on this role. He is a Man of Faith, he is a Man of Character. He is a family man. He is a Trinity man. Gary will impact our student-athletes and coaches with his heart and his soul.
“As the first Director of Sports Ministry, Steven Tompkins laid the groundwork for athletes to focus on developing faith and character through their chosen sport and a variety of activities. My hope is that I can carry on Steve’s legacy and continue to give our young men a chance to grow and develop as men of faith and character and represent Trinity to the best of their ability on and off the field. I am grateful to Mr. Saxton for giving me this opportunity.”Gary Owens ’88
Gary joined the faculty and coaching ranks at Trinity in 1997, after graduating from the University of Louisville with Bachelors and Masters degrees. Gary teaches English and has coached both basketball and football at Trinity, including (20) years on the varsity football coaching staff. I was fortunate to coach Trinity basketball alongside Gary for some of those years. He and his wife Beth have three children: Patrick ’20; Nicholas ’22 and Allison.
Gary’s deep faith in Christ, his love for family and his passion for Trinity, will serve our young men, coaches and families very well in Sports Ministry,
Please join me in thanking and congratulating Gary on this next step in his faith and his career at Trinity.
