Trinity opened in September 1953 on the former site of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and School, which moved to its present location at 501 Cherrywood Road in St. Matthews. The only classroom building was the original Holy Trinity School building, which was known as A Building and was constructed in 1938.
B Building was added to campus in 1956. C Building was completed in 1964. At the time, it was the only campus building with central air conditioning. D Building, an athletic field house, was constructed in 1976. The current gym was completed in 1968.
For the 1977-78 school year, in honor of Trinity’s 25th anniversary, the buildings were formally named. Name plaques were unveiled and blessed at the 1977-78 Opening Mass. A Building was re-christened Old Trinity Hall in recognition of our roots. B Building was named Floersh Hall in honor of Archbishop John Floersh, who was archbishop of Louisville when Trinity opened. C Building was named for Tom Sheehan, a member of Trinity’s first faculty and its first lay teacher. The gym was named Steinhauser Gymnasium in honor of Monsignor Alfred Steinhauser, Trinity’s founding principal. D Building was renamed Shamrock Hall.
The oldest building on campus is Flaget Hall, a house which was built in 1927. The building served as the convent for the nuns who taught at the former Holy Trinity School and as a residence for Trinity’s priest teachers. Today, it houses the Trinity Foundation offices for alumni relations and fundraising. It’s also the residence of Trinity Chaplain Rev. David Zettel ’58.
The Communication Arts Center (old armory), Shamrock Gym (replaced Shamrock Hall), Trinity Auditorium (old VFW Post), Alumni Hall and R.W. Marshall Center were years away from being added to the main campus.
Trinity also has off-campus facilities. In 2019, Trinity built a baseball stadium at St. Matthews Little League. In 2022, the Mather Tennis Center was added on Sears Avenue several blocks from campus.

Alumni of all eras of Trinity's history remember Rev. Dave Zettel. He's Trinity's chaplain and is a member of the Class of 1958, the school's second graduating class. He still resides on campus in Flaget Hall (the Priest House).
Father Zettel celebrates Mass in Trinity’s chapel weekday mornings for faculty and students and an Alumni Mass on the third Wednesday of the month. (No reservations are necessary. Come to the rotunda from 7-7:15 a.m. and we’ll walk to the chapel.)
He also assists with the planning for the annual Alumni Retreat, which will be held on Saturday, February 14, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at Trinity. The retreat is a great way to reconnect with your faith and Trinity. CLICK THE LINK (https://wl.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E355191&id=326) for additional information and to register.
Trinity senior Isaac Bowling profiled Father Zettel for “The ECHO” online newspaper.
