Join us for our weekly “Rock Reflections,” a series celebrating Trinity alumni. From 48 states to countries worldwide, our graduates are making an impact, and we'll share their stories on Trinity's website and social media.
This week's profile is about Matt Palmer-Ball '01

Matt Palmer-Ball ’01 will soon succeed Andrew Heineman ’04 as chair of the Trinity Alumni Association. Andrew has served in that role for two years, providing outstanding leadership.
Matt came to Trinity from Holy Spirit Catholic School. He remembers shadowing as an eighth-grader.
“I began that day undecided about where I would attend high school, but Trinity quickly felt like home,” Matt said. “The older students welcomed me and talked to me like an equal. The teachers and the curriculum captivated me with their sophistication. I walked out of Trinity that day eager to return, and it has been a home to me ever since.”
Matt’s uncles also attended Trinity – Charlie Palmer-Ball ’69, Jack Palmer-Ball ’72, Wayne Palmer-Ball ’74, and Bruce Palmer-Ball '78.
Matt immersed himself in Trinity. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Beta Club and cross country and wrestling teams. He was a National Merit finalist, a Trinity Scholar, and received the four-year Shamrock Award for making the honor roll every semester. He also was senior class vice president.
Math teacher John Esterle H’05 was one of Matt’s favorite teachers.
“I had so many great teachers, but John Esterle stands out for me because of how much he
invested in me from the very start of freshman year,” Matt said. “Mr. Esterle taught my geometry class that year, but, through extra help in the mornings before school, he shored up my fundamentals in algebra and might as well have been teaching me a whole other class outside of school hours. He didn't have to do that. He didn't get paid extra. He did it simply because he cared about me (and the other students who showed up early) enough to want me to succeed. If he was willing to sacrifice for my success, so was I. His example showed me early on how to maximize my potential in the classroom, and I owe him so much for it.”
Matt also has great respect for his wrestling coaches, Eddie Rudolph H’95 and Ken Ellenbrand H’07.
“As much as Mr. Esterle pushed me in the classroom to realize my academic potential, Coach Rudolph and Coach Ellenbrand pushed me to become a better athlete and person,” Matt said. “What you don't know as a teenager is how challenging life will be at times; that you will confront tough situations where solutions don't come easily. Coach Rudolph and Coach Ellenbrand showed me how to find confidence in myself to take on challenges, and they were always in my corner – literally and figuratively –to give me support. And that didn't end in high school. They are still a part of my life 25 years later.”
After graduating from Trinity in 2001, Matt continued his education at the University of Notre Dame. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, graduating cum laude in 2005. He earned his Juris Doctor degree cum laude at Northwestern University School of Law in 2009.
Following law school, Matt served as a law clerk for a federal judge with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2011, he moved to Washington, D.C. and entered private practice, representing financial institutions, industrial corporations and executives in a wide variety of business disputes and white-collar criminal defense matters.
In 2016, Matt entered the public sector. He served as an assistant U.S. attorney for three years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. He also was a trial attorney with the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice. In those roles, he tried three dozen cases to verdict and conducted a broad range of sensitive grand jury investigations concerning bribery, fraud, insider trading, computer crimes, obstruction of justice, violent crime, and possession of illegal firearms and narcotics.
Matt returned to Louisville in 2021. He joined the law firm of Bricker Graydon Wyatt LLP, formerly Wyatt Tarrant and Combs. He represents clients in all manners of disputes and litigation.
He credits Trinity for part of his success.
“I truly believe that Trinity set me on a course in life that I would have otherwise missed,” Matt said. “At any achievement or milestone I’ve had since high school, I’ve reflected on how those things were possible because of Trinity. From college to law school to my professional life, and as a husband and father, I’ve drawn upon tools I gained or strengthened at Trinity: work ethic, perseverance, academic preparation, faith, commitment to family, and a desire to serve others. Without those tools, I wouldn’t be where I am, or who I am, today.
Matt has always remembered his Trinity roots. As an alumnus, he’s served as a Class Agent, Alumni Phonathon caller, and Alumni Board member. He’s also a donor to the Trinity Annual Fund for financial aid and has helped start need-based scholarships. Over 43% of Trinity students receive financial aid, so it’s crucial to many of our families.
“I give back to Trinity so that other young men have the opportunities I had,” Matt said. “My teachers and coaches at Trinity cared about me, invested in me, and gave me tools to succeed in higher education and in life. My friends became my brothers and are still a part of my life. But, after I graduated, I came to appreciate how my experience was not unique. Trinity has provided the same opportunities and community to thousands of young men. I give back to Trinity to ensure there are thousands more to come.”
Matt and his wife, Katie, have two children, Ava, 9, and Ben, 7. They are members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
