This week, we’re reflecting with Benjamin Siegel '08

Benjamin Siegel

Benjamin Siegel ’08 has benefited from his Trinity and legal education in his years of public service. Benjamin arrived at Trinity from Holy Trinity Catholic School. He also was a Trinity legacy; his father, the late Dr. Tony Siegel, graduated in 1973. Dr. Siegel has the notoriety of starring as James Bond in the 1973 student film “Green and Goldfinger.”

Benjamin’s brothers also attended Trinity, Nicholas graduating in 2006 and Joseph in 2011. His brother-in-law, Matthew Robertson, is a 2012 alumnus.

As a student, Benjamin was a member of Patrick House and participated in track, intramural sports, Beta Club and National Honor Society. He earned a Shamrock Award for his academic success. He also was a co-founder of the Ultimate UNO Club, which exists today. Retiring Trinity Principal Dr. Dan Zoeller H’07 has held court with the club since its inception. Benjamin returned to Trinity in May for Dr. Zoeller’s final match as king of the club.

“It was surreal returning to the UNO Club with one of my best friends, classmates and club co-founder, Ted Madden,” Benjamin said. “The movie posters in the Film Study room were updated, but the comically competitive atmosphere upon which the club was built remains the same."

Benjamin cherishes the lifelong friendships and brotherhood he fostered. “I remember the camaraderie my friends and I shared and the constant joking with each other,” he said. “I felt comfortable there because of the great group of guys I was fortunate to spend those four years with. I still communicate with some of my closest Trinity friends on a regular basis. Attending class with them and catching up every day over lunch was a great routine and made those years very enjoyable.”

Instrumental teachers also played a role in Benjamin’s Trinity experience.

“I had a lot of great teachers,” he said. “Scott Holzknecht [’97] and Gary Owens [’88] were two I had multiple classes with and whose lessons I really enjoyed. I learned life-changing lessons with Mr. Holzknecht in his theology classes and in participating in the Justice Walking program as a senior. Mr. Owens’ English and creative writing courses were two classes from which I still profit in my day-to-day work.”

Trinity helped hone Benjamin’s early idea to pursue a service-oriented career, which he says he’s realized with a career in public-interest law. He also credits his parents, Martine and Tony. “My parents instilled in me the initial drive toward doing something to better my local community, as they always did,” Benjamin said. “Trinity helped me further my effort by providing me experiences and education necessary to put that goal into words and action.”

After graduating from Trinity, Benjamin attended Bellarmine University, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in economics in 2012. He spent the summer following his junior year at Oxford University in England, studying history, politics and society. Benjamin attended the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, graduating in 2015, and has spent the last eight years working in public interest law, first with the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, then with the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet, and currently as General Counsel of the Louisville Metro Housing Authority.

He still supports Trinity.

“I hope Trinity can inspire other young men to go out and find careers in public service like it helped to inspire me.”

Benjamin and his wife, Mollie (Louisville Male, 2008), met on their first day at Bellarmine. They’ve been married for 11 years and have two sons, Elijah, 6, and Thomas, 4. They are members of Holy Family Catholic Church.
